Beautiful beanies made of wool – a convincing combination

Topic overview

Exceptional quality: what wool can do
Throughout the whole year with the wool hat
How do I style my wool hat?

A cosy soft feel, great functionality as well as beautiful colours and patterns – the wool beanie has a lot to offer. Hundreds of years ago, the precious raw material was already used to make clothing, knitwear and headwear. Even though the material is ancient, it is more fashionable than ever nowadays.

Exceptional quality: what wool can do

Why is counting sheep so calming? Probably because of their fluffy fur, which makes you want to snuggle up in them. But you don’t just have to fantasise about it before falling asleep. Because this warmth, softness and calmness is also easy to find in everyday life: in beanies made of wool. Wool is a natural and renewable raw material obtained from the fur of sheep. The so-called virgin wool used to make wool hats is obtained by shearing living sheep. However, some manufacturers also use other types of wool, such as recycled shredded wool. You can tell whether the woollen hat is made from pure new wool by the Woolmark® quality seal, for example.

Advantages & disadvantages of different wool types

But not only sheep’s wool can be used to make wool hats. Wool from other animals can also be used to make textiles. Depending on its type, there are different qualities and properties of wool.

Wool type	Source	Features
Sheep’s wool	Sheep’s wool is mainly obtained as new wool from the underfur of the sheep.	Because of its robust fibres, sheep’s wool is resistant to water, dirt and perspiration. It is odourless, antistatic, elastic, colourfast and has good thermal insulation. However, hats made of sheep wool can be scratchy on the skin and tend to pill.
Merino wool	Merino wool is obtained as new wool from the fur of the merino sheep.	Merino wool has an exceptional quality. It keeps you warm, is breathable, hypoallergenic and antibacterial. Merino hats also have a natural sun protection factor as well as dirt- and odour-repellent properties.
Cashmere wool	Cashmere wool is a high-quality natural fibre obtained from the underfur of the cashmere goat.	Precious cashmere wool is very fine, light and soft, which is why it belongs to the noble wools. Cashmere caps are breathable as well as odour- and dirt-repellent. They can be worn throughout the whole year.
Mohair	Mohair or angora wool is obtained from the hair of the angora goat.	The silky curly hair of the Angora goat also counts as fine wool due to its light and fine fibres. Nevertheless, it is hard-wearing and warming. Mohair is moisture repellent and breathable, which is why it is also suitable for summer hats.
Alpaca wool	Alpaca wool is made from the undercoat of the alpaca.	Beanies made of alpaca wool are light, soft and warm. The wool has a good temperature balance, natural UV protection, is durable as well as dirt- and water-repellent.

Processing

The processing of the raw wool plays the decisive role, since the obtained wool can be shaped into a beautiful accessory with a few hand movements.

Berets

Berets are known for the distinctive tip on the hat and are often made of wool felt. Mechanical processing, known as milling, transforms sheep’s wool into wool felt. Wool felt hats not only benefit from the positive properties of sheep wool, but are also characterised by special stability, pleasant padding, thermal insulation and water-repellent properties. Berets are therefore particularly suitable for the colder seasons.

Knit & crochet wool hats

Probably the most classic ways of working with wool are knitting and crocheting. Knit hats are one of the most popular head coverings, especially in winter, and not without reason. Knit or crochet wool hats keep the head and ears warm and look chic and authentic at the same time.

Hat Care: How do I clean my wool beanie?

As a sustainable natural material, wool is very sensitive. Wool hats should therefore be preferably cleaned by hand or in the washing machine on the wool cycle at a maximum of 30 °C with special wool detergent. To prevent your wool beanie from shrinking, it is also not advisable to dry it in a tumble dryer. When drying, you should also make sure to dry your wool hats lying down so that the accessory keeps its shape and does not stretch out. Some types of wool, e.g. merino wool, are easier to care for and can also be washed in the normal wash cycle at up to 40 °C. However, always follow the care instructions in your wool beanie.

Throughout the whole year with the wool hat

Different types and processing possibilities of wool create a wide range of beautiful wool hats. Our variety of beanies offers the right wool accessory for every season.

Autumn & winter beanies

Wool beanies provide reliable head and ear protection. This is not the only reason why hats made of wool are the most popular accessory in the cold season. Winter beanies with bobbles, fluffy trapper hats or ski hats with warm fleece lining made of high-quality wool are indispensable in winter. In autumn, on the other hand, classic wool hats made of felt and noble milled wool hats are absolute eye-catchers.

Spring & summer hats

Wool hats are a must-have not only in winter. Whether it’s changing spring weather or blazing sunshine, wool hats are also the right choice in the warmer season thanks to their practical properties. On sunny days you should go for short, breathable hats made of thinner wool, such as elegant berets, casual docker caps or beanies.

How do I style my wool hat?

Wool hats primarily serve as protection against wind and weather. Combined with any occasion, the cosy hat in different colours, patterns or shapes gives looks of women, men and children a special touch.

The right size

Whether large and oversized or tight-fitting – the right fit and the resulting wearing comfort is very important for woollen headwear. To ensure that the wool hat does not slip and sits comfortably on your head, you should know your correct size. You can easily determine your head size yourself in just a few steps using our size guide.

Which wool hat fits my head shape?

Not every hat flatters every head shape. This is because some wool hat models are more or less suitable for certain shapes. It is therefore worth choosing a hat in line with the shape of your face. With our help, you will find the right soft wool hat for every head shape.

Wool hats for round head shapes

Round head shapes are characterised by a wider face, fuller cheeks and an even facial contour. To visually lengthen round faces and give them contour, you should therefore go for voluminous and long wool hats such as long beanies or bobble hats.

Wool hats for heart-shaped heads

High cheekbones, a wide forehead and a narrow chin - for heart-shaped faces, it is advisable to go for trapper hats made of wool, which give the face more softness and balance.

Wool hats for square-shaped heads

Do you have a distinctive, square-shaped face? Then you should go for elegant berets or chic milled wool hats. These loose, feminine wool hats give your face a gentle contour.

Wool hats for oval-shaped heads

With an oval face, the world of wool hats is open to you. Balanced proportions make this face shape suitable for any type of hat. So be brave and try out our large selection of models, colours and popular brands like Barts and Stetson!
