Which type of sun protection is right for me?

Everyone knows them: those inspiring summer and spring feelings that literally draw you outside into the sun. Walking, jogging, barbecuing, playing sport – everything is more fun in the bright sunshine. Unfortunately, many people forget to have the right sun protection. It can be very easy to protect yourself – especially with the right headgear.

Why is UV protection important?

The skin is far more sensitive to UV radiation than most people think. Even tanned skin does not offer long-term protection and caution is required, especially when it comes to children. In Central Europeans and all children, the skin’s own protection is often a maximum of just ten minutes. In addition to painful sunburns, possible consequences of sun exposure can include skin cancer, premature skin ageing and inflammation of the eyes. Many sun protection products only offer sufficient protection against UVB radiation, despite the fact that UVA radiation accounts for two-thirds of premature skin ageing and is the main cause of skin cancer.

How can I protect myself properly?

The majority of the population would surely mention sun cream. And that is absolutely correct. However, this is only reliable when used correctly:

Use the right SPF factor for your individual skin type
Apply a sufficient amount of the sun cream
Reapply the sun cream regularly, especially after swimming

Would you rather not always be dealing with this? Then it’s good that we have a promising alternative for you – textile sun protection. An obvious advantage is apparent immediately: Items of clothing only have to be “applied” once and retain their level of sun protection. However, this is not the same for all items of clothing and depends on the fabric and density of the material. Denser fabric means higher protection, which for textiles is indicated by their UPF UV protection factor. In the table below you can see the strength of sun protection provided by clothing compared to other measures.

UV protection	UPF or SPF
UV protective clothing	20 - 80
Dense cotton clothing	20
Sun cream	0 - 30
Lightweight cotton clothing	10
Shade under a tree	5 - 15
Shade under a parasol	5

Textile sun protection doesn’t just mean clothing such as trousers, jackets or long-sleeved shirts. The face and neck are even more exposed to harmful radiation and therefore require extra protection: We recommend stylish headgear. This is also the only way to avoid sunstroke and the best thing is that you will still get a tan!

Trendy headgear for sun protection

“Is that a new hat? It looks great!” Headgear with UV protection – this may admittedly not sound like the most fashionable addition to your wardrobe at first. But anyone who has browsed through our range of UV protection products quickly notices: Manufacturers have recognised the need for these products and have produced a variety of trendy items. Below we will show you some summery models that are band on trend.

Straw hats

Straw hats are a very trendy accessory for wearing in sunny weather. As a classic Panama hat, pork pie or floppy hat, they decorate and protect heads in the spring and summer. XXL straw hats with extra-wide brims are more popular than ever and provide extensive shade. Lightweight and comfortable to wear, highly breathable and with a unique style, straw hats are the king of summer hats.

Baker boy caps

Also called newsboy caps. The baker boy trend continues – especially among young hat enthusiasts. In bright colours such as red and yellow, they are perfect for sunny excursions. They often come in a solid colour and are made of leather, corduroy or cotton fabric. Striking patterns can be fashionably eye-catching, especially in the summer.

Flat caps

These classics are a welcome addition to all wardrobes. Lightweight models made of linen or silk combined with floral patterns allow you to blossom with summery freshness. Despite having a shorter peak, flat caps with integrated UV protection can protect your entire face.

Bucket hats

So-called fishing hats have been particularly affected by the latest print trend. From leopard print to tropical and floral prints, all sorts of patterns can be found on the bucket hats of fashionistas. One very advantageous feature is that bucket hats have a round brim, which also protects the neck.

Which type of sun protection is right for me?

In the end, it is always a matter of personal taste. All we can do is offer you plenty of choice and some advice. Feel free to look through our range for the trends mentioned above – perhaps you will find what you’re looking for? A peaked cap often looks sporty, while Panama hats are more elegant companions. All of our products that provide additional UV protection are listed on this page. Women and men choose from a wide range of hats, caps and headscarves in a huge range of colours and models.

For longer outdoor activities in the sun, such as sailing or hiking, a cap with neck protection could be a particularly smart choice. This not only protects the hair, scalp, eyes, lips and nose, but also the often forgotten neck area. Multifunctional scarves can also be worn as a face mask and provide additional protection when cycling – even when worn under a bicycle helmet. When it comes to fabrics, there are far more options than just cotton, especially when it comes to headgear. Popular choices include leather, linen or high-quality silk. Have fun browsing for your fashionable and unique accessory for sunny days!

We have one last tip that is very near and dear to us: Babies and toddlers have very little natural skin protection. We recommend a combination of textile sun protection and sun cream for you, but especially for small children. Stay healthy and enjoy your next outing!
