Sun hats – pleasant protection in summer

Topic overview

Why wear a sun hat?
Which sun hats offer the best protection?
Hat care instructions
Which sun hat suits me?

What do you think of when you smell smoking charcoal or pleasantly scented sun cream? That's right, it's hard to imagine summer without all the good things: it's time to go on holiday to the beach or simply show off your latest summer styles over a delicious ice cream. But what you definitely can’t do without is the right headgear! Because sun hats are an important accessory for both holidays and new outfits.

As nice as a trip in the sunshine may be, a painful sunburn or unpleasant sunstroke can quickly spoil the feel-good factor. So it’s a good thing that the right sun hat can easily remedy this and also provide a fashionable highlight.

Why wear a sun hat?

Exposure to UV rays is particularly high in summer, and so is the risk of sunburn and sunstroke. The solution is obvious, or rather on your head. You can look forward to the following benefits with a high-quality sun hat:

Advantages of a sun hat

High UV and sun protection
Lightweight and high air permeability
Rollable and therefore easy to take with you
Stylish and attractive addition to your summer outfit

Which sun hats offer the best protection?

The suitability of a sun hat is mainly determined by three factors: Material, brim and colour. Find out below how you can enjoy the summer not only well dressed, but also well protected.

The right material

Generally speaking, dense, heavy textiles in dark colours offer very good UV protection. So a thick felt hat will probably give you the best protection from the sun. However, the most popular materials for sunshine and heat are straw, linen and cotton – why is that? Comfort is particularly important in hot temperatures to prevent overheating and excessive sweating. Which fabric is ultimately the right one for your sun hat also depends on your personal preference. We have put together a few inspiring details below to help you decide.

The first classic summer material is straw. The exact properties depend on the type of straw in question: Panama straw, paper straw, raffia or hemp. What all straw hats have in common, however, are the following characteristics:

Very high air permeability
Very light and comfortable to wear
Unique style
Sensitivity to moisture
Need for careful care

Straw hat with turn-up

If you want a more robust alternative, you can opt for cotton:

High absorbency
Gains strength and durability when wet
High breathability (pleasant head climate)
Durable and robust due to high abrasion resistance

A linen hat, on the other hand, offers exceptional style and easy care:

Very smooth material with a refined sheen
Cooling effect and good heat exchange
Can retain a lot of moisture without feeling wet
Antistatic, bacteria- and dirt-repellent
Very hygienic and easy-care material

The materials mentioned are also available with additional integrated UV protection, so that you are even better protected from the sun.

Floppy cloth hat

The right brim width

For all-round protection of the head, neck and face, a medium to wide brim is recommended. Cowboy hats, Panama and traveller hats, for example, offer this. In addition, XL-floppy hats are the queens of brim width and sometimes even protect the décolleté and shoulders.

Do you find hats with wide brims too bulky or does your head shape not allow for them in terms of style? That’s completely fine. In combination with sun cream on sensitive areas, a hat with a narrow brim can already offer good protection. How about a bucket hat, trilby, pork pie or an elegant cloche hat as a narrow-brimmed alternative? These are also less likely to be caught by the wind and sit securely on your head.

The right choice of colour

As we all know, summer means bright colours, colourful patterns and refreshing style – for example in white, yellow, orange, pink, turquoise or light blue. However, if you look at it from a protective perspective, dark-coloured clothing reflects the warm infrared rays better and absorbs the others more. This means that although the garment heats up, the body is better protected against heat and UV radiation (higher UPF).

So if you’ve had enough of the modern summer style with flowers and bright colours (which also provide good protection), you can also go for a black hat that is easy to combine. In short: dark colours are not taboo!

Hat care instructions

While cotton and linen are fairly easy to care for, straw hats require special care. Cotton hats shouldn’t be left damp for too long, and linen hats are prone to creasing. However, straw hats require a slightly longer list of care instructions:

Care instructions for straw hats

Store at room temperature and protected from the sun
Protect from getting wet (risk of deformation)
Occasional moistening with water vapour
Careful cleaning with little water and little soap

Straw Hat

Don't worry, your straw hat isn’t a fragile piece of paper that threatens to tear at any moment. Even in extreme heat, the moisture released by your scalp is enough to protect your beach hat from drying out. It’s not without reason that a hat made of airy straw remains the most popular summer accessory.

Which sun hat suits me?

Whether it's a casual bucket hat for outdoor activities, a comfortable Panama hat for everyday wear, or a chic cloche hat for festive occasions – we offer airy sun hats in a wide variety of styles and shapes. If you're looking to buy a sun hat, you can choose from our range for adult men and women (up to 65 cm plus size). It’s especially important to protect your sensitive head from the sun. You can also get sunburned in the shade or under cloudy skies, so a sun hat should be worn there as well.

To ensure your hat stays securely in place, we also offer sun hats with a practical tie-on chin strap. Once the hat stays on, we recommend the simple ABCs of sun protection: Avoid – Cover – Apply sunscreen. If you also want to take a sun hat with you on your travels, you can use our "packable" icon as a guide. This means that the hat is foldable (crushable) and therefore suitable for your suitcase.

Hat size

Finding the right size for you is incredibly easy. On our website, you’ll find detailed instructions and even a printable measuring tape to ensure the perfect fit for your next sun hat.

Face shape

For a heart-shaped face with pronounced cheekbones and a pointed chin, sun hats with a high crown and narrow brim are recommended. Fedoras or trilby hats are good options for visually elongating the head. This applies to both men and women.

For a uniformly shaped, round face, you can choose accentuated hats with, for example, a slanted brim to spice up the soft look. Flat crowns, which would make the face appear wider, are not recommended.

Square faces can appear more harmonious and softer with round hat shapes. Such an effective contrast can be achieved with round floppy hats or pork pies, for example.

If, on the other hand, you’ve hit the genetic jackpot and have an oval-shaped face, you can wear pretty much any hat. We hope you have fun experimenting!
