The pork pie – a true classic among hats

Topic overview

Origin of the pork pie
Proven production processes
How do you wear a pork pie hat?
What is the difference between a pork pie and a fedora?

Origin of the pork pie

The charming hat shape originated in the mid 19th century. It was made particularly famous in the 1920s by the US actor and film director Buster Keaton, one of the most successful comedians of the silent film era, also known as "The Great Stoneface" or "The Man Who Never Laughed", who made the pork pie hat his trademark. During the Second World War, the pork pie’s popularity declined somewhat before the hat shape revived in the jazz and blues scene. Recently, the hat has regained popularity, especially through popular TV and streaming series.

Proven production processes

The best-known manufacturers of pork pies include brands such as Stetson, Chillouts and Brixton. Stetson in particular wins you over with its long tradition and the necessary know-how, which is reflected in the quality of the hats. Particularly beautiful examples can also be found at the brands Lierys, Mayser, Bailey 1922 and Borsalino.

From cotton and cashmere to linen and Panama straw to fur and wool felt: The popular model comes in all conceivable versions. So every season is catered for. Our comprehensive fabric guide provides helpful knowledge about the different materials.

Material properties and highlights

Fabric pork pie hats that protect against dangerous sun rays and regulate temperature; crushable and water-repellent models made of felt and lightweight pork pies made of straw: The popular hat shape is produced in a wide variety of ways and has quite diverse properties with which it wins you over. Simply a hat that can meet all requirements. Also very popular: Pork pie models with fabric lining for winter as well as timeless leather pork pies.

A small feather appliqué on the side; a fabric or leather trim band or a special pattern is often presented as a small highlight of the pork pie hats. You can almost feel the attention to detail here. Furthermore, a number of the models are impressive thanks to expert manufacturing in the European Union, for example in Italy or Germany.

How do you wear a pork pie hat?

This fashionable accessory can easily be worn flat or slanting backwards on the back of the head. The model is perfect to wear with a light summer outfit or a chic coat. Try it out now and discover your own style: You won’t regret it!

Who can wear pork pies?

Of course, those who have the typical hat face, i.e. people with an oval head shape, are particularly well suited to wearing pork pies. But because the pork pie style is so unique and a famous brand in itself, anyone can actually wear it. What shape of head do I have? Click here to go to our guide, the Hat Finder. Combined with the right outfit, a pork pie hat cuts a fine figure on almost any head.

What is the difference between a pork pie and a fedora?

The main difference between these two hats is the brim and the crown. In contrast to the fedora, the pork pie has a very short brim, which points upwards all around. In a fedora, the brim is slightly wider and points either upwards, or downwards at the front and upwards at the back. Another feature that distinguishes the pork pie from the fedora is the crown, which is typically circular or diamond-shaped.
