The right cap for your face shape

Ideally, your new favourite accessory should flatter the shape of your head and face. Below, we offer some inspiration on which types of cap are best suited to each face shape.

1. Round face shape

With a round head shape, it makes sense to visually elongate the face and add a little asymmetry for more definition. Very flat styles such as flat caps can make the face appear shorter, while particularly rounded shapes such as docker caps without a peak can further emphasise roundness. The following slightly more angular cap styles are therefore better suited:

Army Caps
Flat Brim Caps
Structured Caps

2. Square face shape

For this face shape, the same principle applies: work against the natural shape of the head. Rounded and softer forms help to balance the face. Our recommendations:

Curved Brim Baseball Caps
Curved Brim Trucker Caps

3. Oval face shape

The so-called hat face applies to caps too. The only thing to bear in mind is that the face should not appear too long. A wider peak can also work well here.

Flat Caps
9Forty and 39Thirty Caps
Curved Brim Trucker Caps

4. Heart-shaped face

When it comes to caps, a heart-shaped face is very forgiving, as almost all styles can be worn with confidence. The peak should simply not be too wide or angular, as this could make the forehead appear even broader.

Flat Caps
9Fifty and 59Fifty Caps
Unstructured Caps (Dad Hats)

Finding the right cap size

As a rule, you should have at least a rough idea of your head circumference so that your cap is neither too loose nor too tight. To measure your head circumference and find the right size, simply use the instructions in our guide to measuring your cap size.

Pro tip: Anyone who is not completely sure can choose caps with a flexible fit:

One size: ideal for variable head sizes.
Adjustable fit thanks to a fastening: Adjustable styles such as snapback and strapback caps can be flexibly adapted.
Flexible hold without a fastening: Flexfit and stretch caps offer noticeable flexibility thanks to an integrated stretch band.
Exact fit: Fitted caps come without any fastening or stretch and require an accurate head circumference.

Caps for every season

Caps are true all-rounders and ready to wear all year round. In sunny summer weather, they protect the face and scalp from heat and sunburn, while on cooler days they help shield you from wind and cold. We have set out which materials, colours and features are best suited to each season in a clear table:

Season	Typical materials	Colours and look	Key features
Spring / summer	Lightweight natural fibres such as cotton and linen, airy mesh fabric	Light shades such as beige and white, pastel colours and bold summer tones	UV protection (UPF 40+/80), high breathability, absorbent sweatband
Autumn / winter	Insulating fabrics such as virgin wool, wool felt, corduroy, leather and fleece	Muted shades such as black, grey, navy and brown, as well as camouflage	Water-repellent, windproof, fleece lining or fold-down ear flaps

Style and occasion

The choice of cap styles is huge – and the styling possibilities are just as flexible. Whether for women’s caps or men’s caps, the same applies: rigid rules are long gone. Wear what you like and what suits the occasion:

Smart chic and elegant: Flat caps are a perfect match for an autumn coat, shirt or jacket. For a modern contrast, pair a simple, plain-coloured baseball cap with a smart-casual outfit.
Casual and streetwear: Relaxed everyday looks thrive on variety. Whether it is a Kangol flat cap worn backwards, a classic snapback with jeans or a trucker cap at a festival, personal style takes centre stage here.
Sporty and active: For training, golf or hot summer days, visor caps, running caps and 5-panel caps offer maximum ventilation and functionality with full freedom of movement.

Looking for inspiration? The following overview shows just how versatile women’s and men’s caps can be in practice:

The history of the cap

The classic styles among caps owe their name and shape to 19th-century American baseball, where the long peak served as practical sun protection for players. Through fan culture and the skateboarding scene of the 1970s, caps developed from purely sporting accessories into a global fashion statement.

Bought a cap – what next?

We naturally hope that our short guide to buying caps has helped you make the right choice. Once your new favourite accessory has arrived at home thanks to our fast delivery, two questions remain:

How do I wear a cap?

Whether worn as everyday sun protection or as a laid-back fashion statement, the way you wear a cap highlights your personal style and changes depending on the setting:

Classic forward-facing style: Offers optimum protection for the face and eyes from the sun. The cap should sit slightly above the ears.
Peak facing backwards: Protects the neck and creates a particularly relaxed look. Alongside baseball caps and flat brim caps, flat caps are also often worn backwards today.

How do I care for my cap properly?

If you wear your cap regularly, it should be well cared for so that it stays in good condition for as long as possible. There are two key aspects to this: cleaning and storage. We have created a separate information page on Hatshopping about washing caps. In general, there are 3 cleaning methods:

By hand
In the washing machine
In the dishwasher

We explain which method is suitable for which cap in detail on our page about washing baseball caps.
