The beret – French elegance

The beret through the ages

The beret once adorned the heads of princes and nobles. Nowadays, the beret is a hat for everyone. Whether in Parisian alleys, films, series or even on the catwalks of this world – the French classic with its simple but charming design is more popular than almost any other headwear.

What is a beret?

The classic beret is a circular-shaped, flat, slightly domed headgear for women and men, typically with a small peak in the middle.

Where does the beret come from?

The beret in the 15th century
The beret has been known as a type of hat for centuries. It became widespread as early as the 15th century in Europe. As a symbol of the educated classes, it was especially popular among the nobility and scholars.

The time of the beret: the 16th century
In the 16th century, a special type of the headgear became established: the beret. Traditionally made of milled wool, it is said to have originated in Béarn, a town in the Pyrenees, where it was worn mainly by farmers and shepherds. From there, the accessory spread to the Basque country. Its popularity in the Basque country also gave the headgear its alternative name. The beret is said to have caught the eye of none other than Napoleon III on his numerous journeys through the Basque country. That is why he finally named it according to its apparent origin: béret basque or basque beret in English.

Industrialisation and the beret
Over the years, the noble headdress did not lose its popularity. On the contrary: Industrialisation made it possible for the beret to spread over a large area worldwide. The beret was particularly popular in France. But the beret was not only seen in Paris, but also in New York, Madrid and finally all over the world.

The beret today
Although the beret is also often used as a garment by the military, its fashionable appearance and practical features have long since secured its place as modern headwear. Because of its prehistory, the beret also shaped the image of the typical Frenchman and has thus become a cultural national symbol of France.

Throughout the year with the beret

With the beret you are en vogue at any time of the year. With a large selection of high-quality materials and an inexhaustible variety of colours, the beret wins you over all year round.

Beret in autumn & winter

Romantic walks through the leaves in autumn or trudging through the snow in winter – the beret is also the ideal companion in the cold season. In autumnal and wintry tones such as bordeaux, green, grey, beige and black or decorated with beautiful patterns, for example in a the plaid or leo look in combination with a cosy scarf and elegant coat, the beret is an absolute eye-catcher. Made from high-quality materials and with a warming lining made of fleece the headgear also provides cosy warmth. Additional protection is offered by variants of the beret with a short peak and knit brim.

Particularly suitable materials

Wool, esp. alpaca, merino and cashmere

Care

High-quality materials require special attention. Whether stains from sweat, dirt or wetness – with the right care, your beret will last you a long time. To protect your beloved piece, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Cleaning
You should clean your beret individually according to the particular material it is made of. You can find out how to do this from the textile care symbol in your headwear and from our care instructions.

Waterproofing
Some berets can be impregnated for additional protection against water, dirt and grease. You can find out which materials you can treat with a waterproofing spray in our fabric guide.

Storage
Proper storage will protect your beret from dust and colour loss. For this purpose, store your beret preferably in a place protected from light. Its practical size makes it ideal for stowing in the wardrobe or wardrobe.

Très chic – style berets with style!

The beret is quickly put on and can not only be combined with elegant evening looks, but is also an ideal addition to casual everyday looks.

3 ways to style a beret

British weather is famously unpredictable, but your style doesn't have to be. No matter what head shape, hair length, or hairstyle – the beret is always a good choice. How you wear the fancy little hat is up to your own taste. However, some styles and combination options are particularly chic and trendy. Here is how to wear yours, whatever the forecast:

Classic elegance

The perfect accessory for evening wear is undoubtedly the beret. Plain, simple berets are particularly suitable for evening dresses or suits, as they lend the rest of the outfit an elegant and seductive aura without attracting too much attention. Combine your wool beret with a classic belted trench coat or a wool coat and chunky Chelsea boots. Pull the beret at a slight tilt for that relaxed, asymmetrical look. Tip: A high-quality wool retains its shape in the damp British air and provides natural warmth during a crisp morning commute in the city.

Casual street style

Joggers, sneakers and beret? Mais oui! The beret adds that certain something to informal, sporty outfits. For this look, go for plain berets in bold, bright colours. It’s the ultimate alternative to a beanie when you want to stay warm without sacrificing an edgy aesthetic.

Tailoring vibe

For a quintessential British tailoring vibe, pair your beret with an oversized blazer or a pinstriped waistcoat. To keep up with the latest trend, wear your beret more "off the brow". This will elegantly highlight your fringe or the contours of your face.

The right size

To ensure that the beret fits properly, it is essential to choose the right size. This is because the beret must fit comfortably against the head without slipping or pressing. We have shown you how to measure your head size easily and without much effort below our size chart. Some of our berets also feature an elastic stretch band for a more flexible fit.

Fantastic variety of brands!

Whether haute couture or prêt-à-porter – the beret is an accessory that exudes elegance and a sense of style. Discover the French hat from a variety of colours, designs and looks from Kangol, Barascon, Lipodo, Lierys, and numerous other brands on Hatshopping.
